Sample Shipment

REMITTANCE is defined as the transfer of a genetic heritage sample to an institution located outside the country for the purpose of access, in which the responsibility for the sample is transferred to the recipient. Transferring responsibility for the sample means that the foreign institution will have the same rights to use the sample as the Brazilian institution from which the sample was sent. However, the foreign institution must undertake to respect the Brazilian legislation on genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge.

It is necessary to register the research or technological development with the SisGen, before registering the Shipment.

If you forward a sample of genetic heritage for the purpose of providing services abroad, in which the responsibility for the sample remains with the person who carries out the access in Brazil, be aware that this is characterized as SHIPMENT, and not SHIPMENT. For further shipping guidance, see “Sending a Sample Abroad” at the link  Sample shipment abroad

Important: Law 13.123 does not establish any requirement for the exchange of genetic heritage samples between national institutions.

Carrying out a Sample Shipment Abroad involves:

  1. Register the project and its participants in the SisGen.
  2. Fill in TTM - Material Transfer Term bilingual, available on the PRP website.
  3. Collect the signatures of the legal representative of the foreign institution of destination, the director of the unit and the dean of research (in that order), with the document being able to be processed electronically, with the insertion of digital signatures.
  4. O TTM it will then be dated and numbered by the Dean of Research (patgen@unicamp.br).
  5. in possession of TTM, the teacher/researcher in charge must register the shipment in the SisGen.
  6. After registering the shipment, the Shipping Guide must be completed and the signatures of the researcher in charge at the destination institution and the professor/researcher in charge (supervisor) at Unicamp must be collected.

1 Note: Before filling out a TTM, check if your unit, college or institute has already signed a TTM with the foreign institution, and if it is in force. For more guidance, look for the person responsible for the Patgen of your unit or write to patgen@unicamp.br.

2 Note: Several delivery notes can be linked to the same TTM during its term, even if related to different projects and researchers. The Delivery Notes must be controlled and numbered sequentially, under the responsibility of the faculty/institute.

In order to be regularly sent, in addition to other possible additional documents (see table below), the genetic heritage samples must be accompanied by the 3 documents below:

  • Proof of shipment registration
  • Copy of TTM signed between sender and recipient
  • packing slip

Need for additional documentation

It should be noted that the sending abroad for scientific purposes of animal or plant biological material from species protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), as well as biological material from wild fauna species (except fishing resources) not protected by Cites, may depend on obtaining an export license from IBAMA. See information about wildlife import/export license.
